Bavaria continues with Skolimowski’s masterpiece ‘Deep End’ restoration series of film jewels
Munich/Cannes May 14th, 2009. Following the resounding success of the restoration
of Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s ‘Berlin Alexanderplatz: Remastered’, Bavaria Film
International is thrilled to embark on its next meticulous restoration project: the much
acclaimed ‘Deep End’, Jerzy Skolimowski’s second English-language film.
Highly profiled while in competition at the Venice International Film Festival in 1970,
‘Deep End’ followed of a wave of enthusiastic critical reactions. The success story
went on to theatrical releases in the UK, the US, Italy, Germany and many other
territories in the 70s. After being “lost” in the vaults for several decades, ‘Deep End’
will finally be available as a premiere to the Home Video market in a fully HD
restored version with never-seen-before exclusive bonus features.
‘Deep End’ is a hauntingly disturbing love story that starts on a light note but
gradually builds to a tragic climax. Like Antonioni’s “Blow-Up” or Polanski’s
“Repulsion”, ‘Deep End’ captures the sense of impending dread and spiritual
breakdown in Swinging London at the end of the 1960s. The story of obsessive
teenage love has a terrific soundtrack provided by singer-songwriter Cat Stevens and
seminal German band Can.
After the successful restoration of Fassbinder´s ‘Berlin Alexanderplatz:
Remastered’ Jerzy Skolimowski’s ‘Deep End’ marks the continuation of restoration
projects designed for the HD Home Video Market. "A lot more film "jewels" are
currently sitting in the pipeline", said Christoph Meiser, DVD Product Manager at
Bavaria Media. Among them are three works by Fassbinder as well as a feature film
by Billy Wilder, to be implemented after completion of ‘Deep End’ . Bavaria Film
International – currently attending the 2009 Cannes Festival – is handling
international sales.
