Gerhard Harrer, the famous senior surgeon of the transplantation centre, is an alcoholic. He cannot hide this problem indefinitely from the new and dedicated anaesthetist, Dr. Katrin Klein. She admires Harrer's work but will not let sleeping dogs lie and tries to convince him to follow up a therapy. This attitude earns her criticism from her colleagues who are worried about the clinic's reputation and cover up for their boss. Even assistent doctor Marco Schöne, who is involved with Katrin, refuses to support her initiative. As it becomes impossible to suppress the truth any longer, Professor Harrer is forced to leave. Katrin, whose only intention had been to help, must realize that she has destroyed Harrer's existence. She starts taking care of the now lonely colleague. - At last the assistent medical director Radke can seize the opportunity - he is promoted to senior surgeon. Shortly after he has settled into his new position, he is put to a severe test at gunpoint by a patient's husband who wants to make sure that his dangerously ill wife receives the newly-arrived donor's kidney....

Gerhard Harrer, chirurgien réputé d'un centre de transplantation, est alcoolique. Il ne peut cacher indéfiniment ce problème à la perspicace anesthésiste, Dr. Katrin Klein. Elle admire le travail de Harrer, mais refuse de de jouer son jeu, et essaie de le convaincre de suivre une thérapie. Ceci lui vaut les critiques de la plupart de ses collègues qui craignent que la réputation de la clinique n'en pâtisse, et s'efforcent de "couvrir" leur patron. Même le Dr. Marco Schöne, un Assistant avec qui Katrin a une liaison, refuse de soutenir son initiative.
Alors qu'il devient impossible de dissimuler la vérité plus longtemps, le Professeur Harrer est contraint à démissioner. Katrin, qui n'avait eu d'autre intention que de l'aider à se débarrasser de son problème d'alcool, réalise qu'elle a brisé la carrière et la vie de Harrer. Elle prend pitié de lui et entreprend de l'aider à surmonter cette épreuve. Radke, jusqu'alors assistant de Harrer, est promu chef de clinique. Peu de temps après sa nouvelle nomination, il doit faire preuve de toutes ses compétences lorsqu'il se retrouve nez à nez avec le mari d'une patiente qui pointe une arme sur lui, parce qu'il veut être sûr, qu'on va bien greffer à sa femme le rein que la clinique vient de recevoir en don d'organe...

Star-Chirurg Gerhard Harrer, Chefarzt des Transplantationszentrums, hat Alkoholprobleme. Der engagierten neuen Anästhesistin Dr. Katrin Klein bleibt dies mit der Zeit nicht verborgen. Sie bewundert Harrer, will aber nicht schweigen, sondern ihn dazu bewegen, eine Therapie zu machen. So gerät sie in die Kritik der Kollegen, die - besorgt um das Ansehen der Klinik - ihren Chef decken. Auch Assistenzarzt Marco Schöne, mit dem Katrin ein Verhältnis hat, will nichts davon wissen. Als die Wahrheit nicht mehr vertuscht werden kann, muß Prof. Harrer gehen. Katrin, die Harrer helfen wollte, muß begreifen, daß sie dessen Existenz zerstört hat. Sie beginnt, sich des vereinsamten Kollegen anzunehmen. - Jetzt endlich sieht Oberarzt Radke seine große Chance gekommen - er wird Chefarzt. In seiner neuen Position wird er einer extremen Bewährungsprobe ausgesetzt: Der Ehemann einer Patientin will mit Waffengewalt erzwingen, daß seine schwerkranke Frau eine eingetroffene Spenderniere bekommt...
