A Passing Angel
It was her eyes that first caught his attention. Big dark eyes filled with the sadness of loss, the eyes of a child that has seen more misery than a great many adults. Chief physician Dr. Robert Wagner is mesmerized by these eyes, and by the child they belong to, Neda, an illegal refugee from the war-torn Balkans. Unable to get her out of his mind, Robert simply takes the child home with him after examining her at the hospital. Robert's socialite wife Luisa, who has just launched a career as a designer, violently rejects the girl. Neda's presence painfully reminds her that she cannot have children herself. However, moved by the child's vulnerability and anxiety, Luisa soon abandons herself to her motherly instincts and accepts Neda as the child she never had. Robert, for his part, faces reprisals from the authorities and his own hospital. As their love for Neda grows, the girl begins to gain confidence, and is even able to smile again. Even the authorities are forced to admit that Neda has found a good home. Then, one day, Robert and Luisa discover that Neda's mother is still alive and desperately searching for her daughter. After grappling painfully with their consciences, they decide to tell Neda…

C'était ses yeux qui avaient attiré son attention. De grands yeux sombres remplis d'une insondable tristesse, les yeux d'un enfant qui a déjà vu plus de misères que bien des adultes. Le médecin chef, Dr. Robert Wagner, est comme hypnotisé par ces yeux et par l'enfant auxquels ils appartiennent : Neda, une petite réfugiée illégale, qui a fui les Balkans déchirés par la guerre. Incapable de penser à autre chose, Robert ramène l'enfant chez lui après l'avoir examinée à l'hôpital où il travaille. Sa femme, Luisa, une mondaine qui vient de se lancer dans une carrière de styliste, ignore totalement la fillette. La présence de Neda lui rappelle douloureusement qu'elle-même ne peut pas avoir d'enfant. Emue cependant par la vulnérabilité et l'angoisse de l'enfant, Luisa se laisse bientôt aller à ses instincts de mère et accepte Neda comme l'enfant qu'elle n'a jamais eu. Robert, pour sa part, est en proie aux représailles des autorités et de son propre hôpital. Chérie et choyée, Neda reprend lentement confiance et recommence même à sourire. Même les autorités sont forcées d'admettre que Neda a trouvé une bonne famille. Et puis, un jour, Robert et Luisa découvrent que la mère de Neda est toujours en vie et recherche désespérément sa fille. Harcelés par leur conscience, le cœur lourd, ils décident d'en parler à Neda…

Das Mädchen aus der Fremde
Zuerst sah er nur ihre Augen. Große, dunkle Augen, voller Traurigkeit über erlittene Verluste. Es sind die Augen eines Kindes, das mehr Elend als viele Erwachsene hat sehen müssen: Chefarzt Dr. Robert Wagner ist fasziniert von diesen Augen und von dem Kind, dem sie gehören - der kleinen Neda, die als illegaler Flüchtling dem kriegsgeschüttelten Balkan entkommen ist. Robert untersucht das Kind im Krankenhaus und nimmt sie anschließend mit nach Hause. Seine Frau Luisa allerdings weist das Mädchen schroff zurück: Sie verkehrt in den feinsten Kreisen, hat eben eine Designer-Karriere begonnen und fühlt sich vor allem daran erinnert, dass sie selbst keine Kinder haben kann. Bald aber berühren sie Nedas Verletzlichkeit und Angst, und ihre mütterlichen Gefühle gewinnen die Oberhand. Sie akzeptiert Neda als das Kind, das sie selbst nie hatte. Robert muss sich indessen mit den Schikanen der Behörden und seiner Kollegen auseinandersetzen - doch seine Liebe zu Neda wird immer größer, und endlich kann das Mädchen sogar wieder lächeln. Selbst die offiziellen Stellen müssen eingestehen, dass Neda ein gutes Zuhause gefunden hat. Eines Tages aber stellen Robert und Luisa fest, dass Nedas Mutter noch lebt und verzweifelt nach ihrer Tochter sucht. Nach großem inneren Kampf entschließen sie sich, Neda die Wahrheit zu sagen ...
